Helena, originally from Kent, has lived in Kings Lynn for more than 45 years. With her husband, Barry, she ran a large hotel for 20 years, and then the Gaywood Art Centre and Gallery Coffee shop for a further 15 years, until she retired.
In retirement, she often wonders how she found time to work, and keeps very busy painting in her studio in the garden. She loves to paint people and animals, and spends time trying to get the “likeness” which is so important in a portrait, and a great challenge.
To counteract the “exactness” of portrait work, her next love is to paint on silk. This medium is a challenge in a different way, because the silk and the paint have a mind of their own, and are harder to control. But the results are joyful and colourful and much looser.
Helena also loves to clean and restore old and grimy oil paintings. These often appear from attics where they have been long forgotten, someone has put a foot through them, or used them as a dart board. She finds great satisfaction in cleaning and mending them and seeing the original colours appearing. She also restores the frames and re-gilds them.
Helena is a committee member on the WNAA and also Patron of the Dragonfly Gallery in Watton, where she exhibits frequently. She is also a member of the RSPB and is often inspired by her visits to Titchwell , Welney and Pensthorpe.
