I don't have any art qualifications except my art itself. At secondary school my art teacher encouraged me to go to art school. Instead I got a job as a junior draughtsman in a drawing office dealing with construction. “Well” I thought, “drawing - I like that”. Years later after college day release, university and then becoming a charted civil engineer, I was still sketching in my own time. I was involved in some large engineering projects but although my head was full of maths, my heart still loitered around art.
After living in urban areas for years, I moved to Norfolk and with it's massive skies, it was then that I was compelled to to paint. I realised that visually I'd always been hemmed in by buildings.
Nowadays I occasionally take on commissions for landscapes and portraits. I try to avoid “engineering” subjects and prefer nature. I paint fairly slowly in watercolour or acrylic, but that's fine because I can become lost in the subject. I rarely exhibit, but if I can make enough to buy yet more art material, I'm happy.
