Fen Landscape at the height of Summer I
Aquapen on 100% cotton, 30 cm square
Diane graduated with an MA Illustration (Distinction) from Falmouth University in September 2024. In formative years, she studied Printed Textiles at Manchester Polytechnic and Design & Technology at The Open University, earning a BSc (Hons).
She recently exhibited in Sensing Nature at The Babylon Gallery, Ely, and in the past, regularly took part in the Eastern Open. In 2019, she was among 12 finalists from over 5,000 entries in the Liberty Open Call search for the best textile design in the UK. As a textiles student, she won a competition set by prestige manufacturers Fox for her umbrella cover design.
Nature, the Fen Landscape and the North Norfolk coast, in which she’s lived for the past 30 years, provide inspiration for Diane’s practice. Her current work is process driven combined with traditional mediums of watercolour, gouache, pencil, acrylic, stitch and pen and ink. She follows biophilic principles - ‘biophilia’ meaning literally ‘love of life’- using natural colours, light, organic materials and weathered surfaces - often taking work out in the wind, rain, sun and sea for the elements to work their own magic.
Scientific studies have shown that nature is vital for wellbeing – when we connect, we respond. Sometimes, Diane’s work is reproduced digitally as fashion accessories or homewares to encourage a reconnection with nature in our daily lives. She identifies with the ideals of the Arts & Crafts Movement in that the technology of our time can be harnessed in a positive way for our wellbeing.
Diane worked in a major art museum for a number of years, where she was inspired by the works of great artists such as the Pre-Raphaelites, Impressionists and Botanical Painters. She has also been employed in publishing in a variety of roles - mostly copyright - and her art provides an enjoyable contrast to this aspect of her life.
