Hand stitched appliqué using varied fabrics and threads, 92 x 70cms.
My work involves both paintings and fabrics. My fabric work often uses felting techniques and appliqué.Some are developed from sketch book notation or from my own photos of natural world subjects. Others arise from pure imagination, triggered initially by the excitement of specific unusual fabrics and yarns.
My paintings enjoy celebrating flowers, landscape and coastal subjects by observing and portraying these in a realistic detailed way. As these are rigorous and time consuming I also enjoy working in an almost opposite way from imagination and experimentation with a much freer approach. For this work, collage often provides the ideal working method for playfulness and spontaneity. After creating multiple sheets of graded colour and texture I select then cut out sections of these to arrange and re arrange until I finally find a composition that seems to gel and to speak. Some minimal painting is often needed for final adjustments. These paintings are ultimately my imagined worlds.
