Originally from South East London, I moved to Kings Lynn in l970 to run a family Hotel, which I did until l990, when I decided to have a change of direction, and I opened an Art Centre in Gaywood.
I sold a very wide variety of Art Supplies, plus had a coffee shop and Gallery on the first floor, and a studio, where I held classes and workshops. The 15 years I spent there were very happy, especially helping people to buy the right products and teaching them how to use them. Also with the added bonus of selling their work in the Gallery/coffee shop.
I was a member of the Kings Lynn Art Club, exhibiting regularly at The Fermoy Gallery, and then joined the West Norfolk Artists Association very early in their existence. Our exhibitions at St.Nicholas Chapel were a highlight of the Kings Lynn Festival.
Now retired from business, but luckily still with a studio to work in, I live very happily in Snettisham., where I continue to paint. My first love is painting portraits of people and animals, mostly in pastel and Acrylic. To let my imagination run wild, I change to painting on silk, which is far harder to control, and is therefore looser and very colourful. As long as I have a pencil or a brush in my hand, I am happy.
I have joined the Wash Art Group who meet locally on a weekly basis to paint together, and exhibit annually. This is a very happy group and suits me perfectly, as I love getting together to paint, and exchange ideas and methods, and get some constructive criticism. I also take part in the Art Exchange and other events planned by the committee members of the WNAA, where I can meet my friends.
Being part of both these groups fulfils my artistic needs, and I feel very lucky to still be receiving commissions, not only of portraits, but cleaning and restoring old oil paintings and frames, which is very satisfying.
The new venture into Chequer House is a very exciting one for the WNAA and at the age of 83, I am looking forward to exhibiting there for as long as possible, and being part of it all!
