‘Columbia Road Market’ pen & wash

‘What have you been up to?’ his work colleagues asked

‘Painting’

‘Matt or emulsion’

I had never painted before but I was inspired to take an art course at Willy Lott’s Cottage, Flatford Mill, after my artist mother’s death. Pure watercolour never had enough definition for me, so combining drawing with dip pen and watercolour became my default medium.

Through joining like-minded sketching groups, I found my love of buildings and landscapes. Particularly when travelling, the joy of stopping to fill one’s sketchbook is so much more memorable than taking photos, especially if it involves beer or coffee.

Time spent at the Royal Drawing School and joining the national drawing society, the Society of Graphic Fine Art, led me to become President of the SGFA for the last five years. I have led the Society to return to the Mall and Bankside Galleries, London, and regional members shows at the Adrian Hill Gallery, Holt, and Mandells Gallery, Norwich.
It has been an exciting journey into the art world, from absolute beginner to exhibiting at some of the top galleries in the country.
