Out On The Fen

Hi, I’m Ian and I make photographs.

My love of photography started with my dad encouraging me to take family photos with his Kodak Box Brownie and then an Ilford Sportsman at the age of 8. The results I saw when the photos came back from being developed and printed were terrible but with further guidance and help from my dad I discovered that I loved taking photos, which still continues.

My years at a Technical High School gave me the opportunity to develop my artistic eye and practical skills , learning to take B&W photos with both a twin lens reflex Mamiya and 35mm Olympus SLR cameras , also learning developing and printing in the art department’s own darkroom.
I gained a direct entry to a degree course from school where I continued to use a camera to record the things I saw, for developing my ideas and then into the projects I made plus making memories of my hobbies and life.

After graduating with a BA( Hons ) in Three Dimensional Design, I pursued a career in industry. ( rather than taking up a place at The Royal College Of Art I was offered – I needed to earn some money ! ) along with having my own design business for a while, making prototype pieces and display items for clients.
I enjoyed my work, but industry was in a bad way and my job ended so I used my practical skills and know how to get a job in a car dealership service centre before returning to university to gain a teaching degree.

Working in the education sector I progressed to become a Head Of Department in 3 schools creating new Design Technology facilities in each of them.
However teaching was going through many changes and so I left education to then work in the Third Sector for a national charity supporting people with learning difficulties to develop their skills and assist them in finding appropriate opportunities for them to become more independent.
I still work in the charity field part time with people who are living with dementia, their carers and families.

Since moving to rural west Norfolk I’ve maintained my photographic habit and gradually
refined my style along with practical understanding and abilities by enrolling in a local photographic evening class, attending photographic training workshops , exhibitions and  events to get to where I am now, still learning, experimenting, refining my visual literacy and understanding from past and present exponents of photography alongside the technical challenges of using different cameras and digital editing.

For me photography is a hobby and another means for me to be creative, expressing my own personal take on the things I notice, from the ordinary to the amazing, it’s all about discovery and learning how to see things that surround us .
I can’t think of a time when I’ve not had a camera of some sort and continue to own several ( well 19 to be exact at this time of writing ! )

  • I currently care for a re-homed older ‘street’ dog from Romania.
  • I love cooking.
  • I also have owned and rebuilt / customised many classic cars and motorcycles..
  • Italy is my favourite country, closely followed by the USA.
  • I enjoy single malt whiskies.
  • Learning new things continues to provide me with great satisfaction.
