Visit to Frameless, Marble Arch, London
If you think that art should stay on the canvas where the artist placed it then Frameless in London is not for you. With 4 themed galleries each featuring 6-8 specific artworks, the experience felt completely immersive, with projections over the floor, walls and ceilings accompanied by music and sound effects that made the artwork come alive.
The colours, music and movement created a genuinely fantastic atmosphere in the huge spaces.
Visitors initiated the process in the Colour in Motion gallery where the colour patches gathered like leaves on the floor and kicking through them shifted them across the floor onto the walls to arrange themselves into impressionist masterpieces.
In Beyond Reality Salvador Dali’s elephants stalked above us on their impossible long legs and the creatures from Garden of Earthly Delights Triptych by Hieronymus Bosch frolicked in the garden surging into other fantastical scenes
The art of Abstraction works were projected onto semi transparent screens and the curators had had fun with the music.
The World Around Us gallery was the largest of all. We were immersed in scenes from London to Venice to the countryside and the sea. We stood with The Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog as the wind blew his hair and we gazed over the landscape. We saw, felt and heard Vesuvius erupt. The eruption rumbled smoke and lava flowed and cinders flew overhead as the orchestra played. What would Joseph Wright of Derby have thought about this dramatisation of his work?
What would any of the many featured artists have thought?
For me it gave a new perspective to familiar works and highlighted aspects and details previously unnoticed .
The whole experience felt both relaxing and inspiring. I left feeling uplifted and full of creative energy — a brilliant place to visit and one I’d happily recommend.
