King’s Lynn Museum is a little gem in the heart of the town, right next to the bus station. If you haven’t yet discovered it you can take advantage of FREE ENTRY from 1st October to 30th March, with a small entry charge in the summer months. Open 10am – 5pm.
Coming into the museum you are immersed in the area dedicated to ‘Seahenge’, a large timber circle found on Holme Beach in 1998. Half of the original oak posts are on display, in the positions where they were found. This was a large timber circle, 6.6 metres across with a central stump.
It is thought to have been built around 4,000 years ago when the area around today’s Holme Beach would have consisted of salt marshes protected from the sea by sand dunes and mud flats. Over many years a layer of peat built up around and over the timbers, which has protected them from decay. The display is very atmospheric and the surrounding cabinets give a wealth of information about the area, its inhabitants at the time and their way of life.
In complete contrast to this is a section dedicated to ‘May The Toys Be With You’ – Star Wars of course, here until 30th May. The rest of this quite tiny museum is full of items relating to the social, maritime and industrial history of King’s Lynn, which makes a fascinating collection.
There is lots of information on the museum website, including links to events such as ‘Introduction to Seahenge’ on 7th March and an online ‘collection’, which is much too big to go on permanent display.
A group of our members were completely spoilt for choice by all of this and had a great time drawing at the Museum. Some of the results are shared with you here.
The WNAA social committee aims to provide a variety of opportunities to meet other members and do art related things, usually monthly activities such as this one, so keep an eye on your messages and try to join in if you can.
